Peel Public Health issues Section 22 Order to close all Peel schools

Peel Public Health issues Section 22 Order to close all Peel schools”

Schools in Peel Region are closed for in-person learning starting today.

This closure is a necessary step to protect staff and students in Peel Region.

School is out, or online-only at least, in Mississauga and Brampton, as public health authorities seek to stamp out a rash of new COVID-19 cases in the region. "Since COVID-19, including variants of concern, are circulating in the community, cases related to community transmission are expected".

The closure also affects Dufferin-Peel District Catholic School Board, Conseil Scolaire Viamonde, Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir, all private schools and all special education staff and students.

There have been nearly 2,500 reported COVID-19 cases linked to the province's schools in the past two weeks, with 63 schools closed.

In an emailed statement to CTV Kitchener, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang said "given our overall COVID-19 situation in the region at this time", she doesn't plan to issue a Section 22 order to shutdown schools.

"We will keep the school communities informed as soon as the reopening dates are confirmed", TPH said in a tweet.

Dubey added: "COVID-19 spreads through close contact with someone who is infected with the virus, and not from specific locations".

Peel Public Health continues to work closely with our school board partners to prioritize the health and safety of staff and students. "This action is being taken in an effort to keep our communities safe and prevent further spread of COVID-19". In a statement, health officials say the spring break will go ahead as planned from April 12 to 16.

The minister's office has defended its stance on keeping students in class, saying Monday "schools remain safe with strong public health measures in place that have kept almost 99% of schools in Ontario open".

Students cross the street at Tomken Road Middle School during the COVID-19 pandemic in Mississauga, Ont., Thursday, April 1, 2021. There are over 1,000 schools with at least one reported case and 83 are now closed as a result.
