Rep. Matt Gaetz says he's 'absolutely not resigning'”

Gaetz went on to characterize the accusations against him as a political attack.

"As for me? I'm going to fight like hell for my constituents and the country I deeply love", Gaetz wrote.

In response to the report, Gaetz denied the allegations in an interview with Fox News' Tucker Carlson. Gaetz's subsequent public remarks about the investigation have been limited to short statements from his office or posts on his Twitter account.

Gaetz has been accused by investigators of paying an underaged woman to cross state lines for sex through things such as "hotel stays, meals, and other gifts".

In the piece, Gaetz broadly defends his past sexual lifestyle without delving into specifics-and notes that he previously defended former Democratic representative Katie Hill when she was caught up in her own sex-based ethics scandal involving a staffer and her ex-husband (which ultimately resulted in her resignation). He also hit back with his own claim that the investigation was being used to extort his family out of $25 million.

The Justice Department investigation began previous year while Trump was still president.

According to documents obtained and reported by the Washington Examiner, the alleged scheme revolves around attempts by former Air Force intelligence officer Bob Kent and Beggs & Lane attorney David McGee, a former federal prosecutor, to free ex-FBI agent Robert Levinson, who disappeared in Iran.

Levinson was declared dead by the US government previous year. McGee forcefully denied Gaetz's claims.

Gaetz made no mention of the extortion plot in his op-ed Monday.

"No, I am absolutely not resigning", he wrote Monday in one of his first public comments about the allegations. "But when it comes to the allegation that I, a grown man, paid for an adult girlfriend's expenses?" "And second, I, as an adult man, have not slept with a 17-year-old".

My personal life is and always has been conducted on my own time and my own dime.

Nevertheless, Kent said Gaetz's father initially interpreted the overture as a blackmail attempt. Although I'm sure some partisan crooks in [Attorney General] Merrick Garland's Justice Department want to pervert the truth and the law to go after me, I will not be intimidated or extorted. - Embattled U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., said Monday that he is "not a monk" but "certainly not a criminal".

"I'm here this morning to state that nothing could be farther from the truth".

Nelson left Gaetz's office in late October of previous year, The New York Post reported, in what he called a "planned departure" in order to support "the military missions in a private capacity" in the Florida Panhandle.

Nelson, who said he remains "loosely affiliated" with Gaetz's office as an unpaid adviser, stated that he notified Gaetz's office that he had spoken to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, but that he has not spoken to the congressman personally in months.
