Tear gas has been fired and a curfew imposed amid angry protests after police fatally shot a black man in a traffic stop in the U.S. city of Brooklyn Center, just north of Minneapolis. "Gwen and I are praying for Daunte Wright's family as our state mourns another life of a Black man taken by law enforcement".

The trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis officer charged in George Floyd's death, was slated to continue Monday.

Protests immediately followed Wright's death.

A Sunday afternoon traffic stop in Minnesota turned into an officer-involved shooting and a auto accident.

The family of Daunte Wright said he was shot in the city of Brooklyn Centre on the outskirts of Minneapolis before getting back into his auto and driving away then crashing the vehicle several blocks away.

Twenty-year-old Daunte Wright called his mother at approximately 1:40 p.m. telling her that he was being pulled over. "He said, 'We'll explain to you when you get out of the auto'". They tried to take him into custody, but he went back into the vehicle, police said. "Nobody will talk to us.I said please take my son off the ground". The violation was that he had air fresheners hanging from his mirror. She said she then heard scuffling and the phone was cut. He heard that his son was shot when he received a call from his wife.

Wright's family had said earlier that he was shot in Plymouth but he was not. "She was saying, 'Daunte was shot!'"

A woman who lives near the crash site said she saw officers pull a man out of a auto and perform CPR. A passenger who got out of the auto was also covered in blood, Hanson said.

According to the StarTribune, Officials with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension confirmed that the agency was on the scene of a shooting involving a police officer in Brooklyn Center on Sunday afternoon. Brooklyn Center is a city of about 30,000 people located on the northwest border of Minneapolis. Police set off flash bangs and sprayed chemical irritants at the crowd.

Brooklyn Center Police said in a news release that the stop for a traffic violation was initiatied on the 6300 block of North Orchard Ave. shortly before 2 p.m.

"One officer discharged their firearm, striking the driver", a statement read. An officer fired at the vehicle, striking the driver, with the auto travelling several blocks before striking another vehicle.

Members of an angry crowd vandalised two police vehicles yesterday after the death of a man who was shot by an officer about 16 km from where George Floyd died during his arrest last May in Minneapolis, a Reuters witness said. Police said the officers' body cameras were activated during the incident.

Wright, 42, said his son had recently asked his mother for $50 to take his vehicle to the carwash, where he was headed when the shooting happened.

Mr. Wright was in a vehicle his family had just given him two weeks ago, and was driving with his girlfriend, she said.
