Australia shelves plans to buy J&J's one-dose COVID-19 vaccine”

Canada continues to expect its first shipment of Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccines at month's end despite USA and European Union pauses over blood clot fears, officials said Tuesday, while also announcing a first Canadian clotting case linked to the AstraZeneca jab.

So far, more than 19 per cent of Canadians have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while the Australian government says it has given shots to almost 1.18 million people, or 4.5 per cent of its population.

"These side effects are expected and are not of concern unless severe or persistent". Quebec's public health director, Dr. Horacio Arruda, gave a more exact version of Quebec's statistics in a statement, confirming that the province's rate of blood clots so far holds with what's been reported elsewhere.

Australia has no current plans to add Johnson & Johnson's one-dose coronavirus vaccine to its immunization drive, authorities said on Tuesday, as it moves away from procuring vaccines under review over blood clots.

U.S. health authorities earlier recommended pausing the Johnson & Johnson shot while the company said it would delay its European rollout, after six American women aged between 18 and 48 developed a rare type of clot in the brain along with low platelets.

Quebec says the female patient, whose age was not revealed, received the appropriate care and is recovering at home.

Symptoms also include unusual skin bruising and pinpoint round spots beyond the site of injection.

The government was in talks with the pharmaceutical giant, which had asked for initial approval for its vaccine from Australia's medicine regulator. "We had anticipated potentially a significant drop (in vaccination numbers, but that is) not what we have seen at this stage", Health Minister Greg Hunt told reporters in Canberra.

"The government does not intend to purchase any further adenovirus vaccines at this time".

Johnson and Johnson also required a no-fault compensation scheme before it would sell vaccines to Australia, which the government was not committed to introducing.

"This is a very good example", Legault said.

"We've got a prime minister that's retreated to Facebook and a minister who's making announcements through a spokesperson without clear background information".
