Ontario schools to switch to remote learning after spring break

Ontario schools to switch to remote learning after spring break”

Ontario has seen surging COVID-19 infections in recent days, with almost 3,700 new infections reported Tuesday.

Ontario said it will add hundreds of critical care beds this week to help with an influx of COVID-19 cases that is pushing the health-care system to the brink.

All schools will switch to remote learning on April 19, the Ford government announced on Monday afternoon, saying they are doing so in response to the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases, as well as the spike in hospitalizations.

The Ford government's decision to shelter schools for in-person learning comes after multiple public health units, most notably in Toronto and Peel, issued a Section 22 order to close all schools for two weeks and move to remote learning only.

She says the city is vaccinating more people against the virus but that still won't be enough to offset the impact of the variants.

The province reported 217 new COVID-19 in schools today, including 186 in students.

Horwath acknowledged that some type of third wave was inevitable for Ontario but said the extent of it was "very much avoidable".

The province is now under a stay at home order first implemented on April 6 and is to be in effect for at least four weeks. The province says those vaccines have been "weighted to support vaccination of high-risk communities to ensure reliable delivery".

The letter goes on to say that even though numbers have been good in the HPE area "we have had outbreaks in our manufacturing sector and we believe those employees should also be included".

Quebec, meanwhile, was dealing with the fallout over its own decision to impose stricter rules after hundreds of people gathered Sunday in Montreal's historic district to protest the provincial government's decision to advance the nighttime curfew to 8 p.m.

Eligible patients will be able to book a vaccination appointment shortly either through their local public health unit or through the province's booking system.

The ministry of health said that there are 1,822 people in hospital because of COVID-19. "Numerous health indicators continue to surpass the worse case scenario", Ford said. But Tam said there has also been a "concerning rise" in the number of cases of the P. 1 variant, first associated with Brazil, which is particularly worrisome because it may reduce the effectiveness of vaccines.

The province has identified more than a dozen postal codes that are considered hotspots for COVID-19 transmission.
