Portland protesters march after Minnesota police killing of Daunte Wright”

Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday expressed grief over the shooting of 20-year-old Daunte Wright by a police officer and called for a reimagining of USA policing and public safety.

Brooklyn Center's mayor, Mike Elliott, said on Monday that he supported the firing of the officer who killed Wright.

The fatal police shooting of a young Black man in a Minneapolis suburb appeared to result from an officer mistakenly opening fire with her gun instead of a Taser in the midst of a struggle during a traffic stop, the city's police chief said on Monday. In newly-released body camera video, Wright can be seen getting back into his auto after a struggle with police.

Lots of people are angry about Mr Wright's death, and it has sparked protests in Minnesota where a curfew has been brought in.

The shooting occurred while Minneapolis is grappling with the murder trial of Derek Chauvin, the city officer who knelt on George Floyd's neck in 2020.

Wright had been stopped for a traffic violation at which point the officers realized he had an outstanding arrest warrant. A female police officer shouts, "I'll tase you" and then "Taser! Taser! Taser! Taser!" the officer is heard shouting on her body cam footage released on Monday. She draws her weapon after the man breaks free from police outside his vehicle and gets back behind the wheel.

After firing a single shot from her handgun, the auto speeds away, and the officer is heard saying, "Holy shit!"

Wright's father, Aubrey Wright, told ABC's Good Morning America earlier on Tuesday that he rejects the explanation that Potter pulled the wrong weapon. "He was my life, he was my son and I can never get that back. I miss him so much, and it's only been a day", his mother said as she wept at the vigil. This officer has been on the force for 26 years.

While not planned, Biden's schedule on Tuesday seems to encapsulate the situation: he will attend a memorial for the Capitol Police officer killed in the line of duty before meeting at the White House with members of the Congressional Black Caucus, some of whom have been working on a police reform bill.

Wright's vehicle traveled several blocks before crashing into another vehicle.

"Officers and medical personnel performed lifesaving measures but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene, police said".

The US city of Brooklyn Center is just 14 miles away from where George Floyd died in police custody last May.

Demonstrators began to gather shortly after the shooting, with some jumping on top of police cars.

After medics arrived, she told the two officers who shot the man to get into separate squad cars, turn off their body cameras, and not to speak to each other.

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has called for "peace and calm" following the shooting of a black man by police on Sunday.

Court records show Wright was being sought after failing to appear in court on charges that he fled from officers and possessed a gun without a permit during an encounter with Minneapolis police in June.

By late Monday, only a few dozen protesters remained. Forty people were arrested, Minnesota State Patrol Col. Matt Langer said at a news conference early Tuesday.

Police used gas canisters and flash-bang grenades to disperse the hundreds of protesters who had gathered outside the Brooklyn Centre police station. Today, just 38% of Brooklyn Center residents say they are white alone, while almost 30% are Black.

Wright's death prompted protests in other US cities, including in Portland, Oregon, where police said a demonstration turned into a riot Monday night, with some in the crowd throwing rocks and other projectiles at officers.
