Chauvin skips testifying as trial in Floyd death nears end”

Prosecutor Jerry Blackwell told the judge that the prosecution had new evidence to present regarding carbon monoxide in George Floyd's blood.

"This late disclosure is not the way we should be operating here", Cahill said.

Chauvin, 45, is on trial for the murder and manslaughter of George Floyd, who died during an arrest in Minneapolis on May 25, 2020.

The question of whether Mr Chauvin would testify was the subject of weeks of speculation, with legal analysts split over whether his testimony would help or hinder his case.

The only time Chauvin has been publicly heard defending himself was when the jury listened to body-camera footage from the scene last May.

Dr. Martin Tobin, a native of Co Kilkenny now based in the Chicago area, was briefly recalled by the prosecution today, April 15, to "knock down" defense witness Dr. David Fowler's theory that carbon monoxide poisoning from a squad car's exhaust might have contributed to George Floyd's death, the Associated Press reports. Nelson said prosecutors have known for weeks that Fowler had meant to bring up potential complications concerning carbon monoxide and should have sought to include the tests, conducted during Floyd's autopsy, earlier.

With the trial in session, Minneapolis has been bracing for a possible repeat of the protests and violence that broke out last spring over Mr Floyd's death.

But testifying could have also given the jury the opportunity to look at his unmasked face and see or hear any remorse or sympathy he might feel. That contradicted prosecution experts who said Floyd succumbed to a lack of oxygen from the way he was pinned down. But Dr. Fowler claimed Floyd died from a combination of heart disease, drug use and tailpipe emissions from a police cruiser.

They also called a forensic pathologist, former Maryland chief medical examiner Dr David Fowler, who said Floyd, whose death was ruled a homicide at the hands of the police, really died of heart disease, and that the exhaust fumes of the adjacent police auto may have also poisoned him.

Chauvin was seen in a video that kneeling on the neck of the 46-year-old black man for more than nine minutes.

Bystander video of Mr Floyd gasping that he couldn't breathe as bystanders yelled at Mr Chauvin to get off him triggered worldwide protests, violence and a furious examination of racism and policing in the US.
