India hits record 200000 daily Covid cases, hospitals stretched”

The total case load reached 14.1 million, only second to the United States, which leads the global tally with 31.4 million cases.

According to the ICMR, 26,06,18,866 samples have been tested up to April 13 with 14,11,758 samples being tested on Tuesday.

"The situation is disgusting", said Avinash Gawande, an official of a government hospital in the industrial city of Nagpur that was battling a flood of patients, as were hospitals in neighbouring Gujarat state and Delhi in the north.

"We are a 900-bed hospital, but there are about 60 patients waiting and we don't have space for them".

COVID-19 cases also hit new records in the capital Delhi, with doctors warning the surge there could be deadlier than in 2020.

A total of 1,72,085 deaths have been reported so far in the country including 58,526 from Maharashtra, 13,008 from Karnataka, 12,945 from Tamil Nadu, 11,436 from Delhi, 10,434 from West Bengal, 9,309 from Uttar Pradesh, 7,609 from Punjab and 7,321 from Andhra Pradesh. Amid rising cases and shortage of beds and critical care facilities, the Delhi's local government issued orders to attach hotels and banquet halls with private and government hospitals, to add more beds for Covid patients.

COVID-positive patients - from a one-and-a-half-year-old toddler to many elderly - and their relatives kept streaming in to the emergency ward at LNJP, arriving by ambulance, vehicle or auto-rickshaw throughout the day.

"We are definitely overburdened".

India reported a record 200,000 new coronavirus cases on Thursday as a massive wave of new infections sweeping the country intensifies.

Despite injecting the third highest number of vaccines doses worldwide, India has covered only a small part of its 1.4 billion people.

As the second wave of Covid-19 intensifies, India's federal government has urged citizens, who eligible to take the coronavirus vaccine, to get shot as soon as possible.

India is only the second country in the world after the United States to cross the threshold of 200,000 new cases a day.

Meanwhile, new curbs came into force in Maharashtra yesterday.

"He died after six or seven hours", he said.

Hospitals in other places including Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state, reported oxygen shortages.

"If such conditions persist, the death toll will rise", the head of a medical body in the industrial city of Ahmedabad told its chief minister in a letter.

The Indian government has not made any move to cancel a major Hindu festival now underway on the banks of the Ganges River, where more than 1.3 million people participated in a bathing ritual on Wednesday.
