Third dose likely needed after receiving two Pfizer vaccine shots: MOH official”

Bourla added that he thinks people may need to be immunised against coronavirus annually.

He added, "The COVID-19 vaccine is similar to the rest of the vaccines, such as the influenza vaccine, where a person needs to receive the flu vaccine every 12 months".

The CEO of Pfizer believes people will need a third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine six to 12 months after their first round.

During a panel discussion hosted by CNBC in conjunction with CVS Health that aired on Thursday, Albert Bourla said a potential booster shot would be administered six to 12 months of being fully vaccinated.

"A likely scenario is there will be likely a need for a third dose somewhere between six and 12 months and then from there would be an annual revaccination", he said at the event, as cited by The Hill.

And Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov warned earlier this week that Brussels was facing a huge price hike as it negotiates almost two billion additional doses of the vaccine for the coming years.

The Pfizer coronavirus vaccine that has been made in partnership with German company BioNTech is touted to be 91 per cent effective in preventing the virus.

He said the six months of data shows "extremely, extremely high" protection from COVID-19, noting that protection still "goes down by time".

About 144 volunteers will be given the third dose, mostly those who participated in the vaccine's early-stage USA testing previous year.

"In poorer countries, including in Africa, we sell it at cost".

While the duration of immunity after vaccination is being studied, booster vaccines could be needed, David Kessler, chief science officer for President Joe Biden's Covid-19 response task force told a congressional committee meeting.

In the United States, health officials are already preparing for booster doses to be issued between nine and twelve months after people are fully vaccinated.

"We don't know everything at this moment", he told the House Coronavirus Crisis Subcommittee.

"It seems strong but there is some waning of that and no doubt the variants challenge" that, he said.

The head of the US-based company defended the cost of the jabs, which he said are saving lives and can help countries emerge from the pandemic.

"I think for planning purposes, planning purposes only, I think we should expect that we may have to boost". By the middle of April, around 120 million people in the US had received at least one dose, according to figures from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
