US, China commit to climate cooperation ahead of key summit”

The United States and China are "committed to cooperating" on the pressing issue of climate change, the two sides said Saturday, issuing the pledge days ahead of a key summit hosted by President Joe Biden.

China says President Xi Jinping has agreed with leaders of France and Germany to strengthen their cooperation on climate change.

"The United States and China are committed to cooperating with each other and with other countries to tackle the climate crisis, which must be addressed with the seriousness and urgency that it demands", said the statement from Kerry and China's special envoy for climate change Xie Zhenhua. China has already set an ambitious target to become carbon-neutral by 2060.

Chinese Vice Premier Han Zheng and U.S. climate envoy John Kerry met via video link on Friday, with both sides expressing willingness to cooperate on climate change, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported.

China a year ago announced bold plans to peak carbon emissions before 2030 and become carbon-neutral by 2060.

The main goal of his travels to China and elsewhere is to rally support for a virtual climate summit hosted by US President Joe Biden next week.

Han said China welcomed the USA return to the 2015 Paris Agreement, according to Xinhua.

It's unclear how much Kerry's China visit would promote US-China cooperation on climate issues.

China in recent years has taken over the mantle of global climate leadership left vacant when former U.S. president Donald Trump withdrew from the Paris agreement to address the catastrophic effects of global warming.

According to their statement, both Washington and Beijing "intend to develop" their respective long-term strategies to achieve carbon neutrality by the Glasgow meeting. The summit aims to relaunch global efforts to keep rising global temperatures to below 1.5 degrees Celsius, as agreed in the Paris accord.

The United States and China will continue to discuss, both on the road to the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) and beyond, concrete actions in the 2020s to reduce emissions aimed at keeping the Paris Agreement-aligned temperature limit within reach, read the statement.

The two also said their countries would take short-term actions, such as helping developing nations fund the transition to more sustainable energy sources and phasing down production and consumption of hydrofluorocarbons, a particularly potent greenhouse gas.
