Police identify suspect in Texas shooting

Police identify suspect in Texas shooting”

Police said on Twitter that they were on the scene of an active shooting and asked nearby residents to shelter in place and avoid the area.

A manhunt for a former Texas sheriff's deputy suspected in the fatal shooting of three people in Austin ended Monday when authorities said he was arrested without incident about 20 miles (32 kilometers) from the scene of the weekend attack.

Austin Police Interim Chief Joseph Chacon told reporters that "the victims were all known to this suspect". "We have people who have lost their lives out here", Chacon said. He said officials were transitioning the search for Stephen Broderick, 41, from that area to a "fugitive search".

Three people were fatally shot in Austin on Sunday and no suspects are in custody, emergency responders said. "We'll do our best ... to get this person in custody ... and hopefully with no more loss of life".

Austin's KXAN, citing an arrest affidavit, reported last June that the Travis County Sheriff's Office detective was on administrative leave following an arrest for allegations of sexual assault.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Broderick resigned from the Travis County Sheriff's office previous year after he was arrested on a charge of sexual assault of a minor. He resigned after he was arrested past year on a sexual assault charge. He said Broderick knew the victims but didn't elaborate on how or provide a motive for the shootings.

The newspaper also reports that Broderick's wife filed for a protective order and divorce shortly after his arrest. A child was involved but has been located and is safe, he added. The area where officers responded includes a strip mall and several retail stores with a large apartment complex behind it.
