Congresswoman denies inciting violence — George Floyd death

Congresswoman denies inciting violence — George Floyd death”

We get more active, we've got to get more confrontational.

Mr Nelson said it was reasonable to interpret the comments as an elected official from the United States congress making threats against the jury process.

"I'm going to fight with all of the people who stand for justice", Ms Waters said on Saturday.

Asked if Waters should apologize, Pelosi said no.

Chauvin's attorney Eric Nelson moved for a mistrial, objecting, among other things, to Waters's statements, which he argued had the effect of "threatening and intimidating the jury." He added that the "pervasive" media coverage that the trial has received could have also influenced the 12 jurors (and two alternates) who will decide whether Chauvin is guilty or not of Floyd's death.

"I hope we get a verdict that says guilty, guilty, guilty", she said. We've got to make sure that they know that we mean business.

"I myself think we should take our lead from the George Floyd family". I'm talking about legislation. I want you to stop meeting. "I don't agree with that".

The jury, Cahill believes, will not be swayed by Waters' rhetoric.

"Well, I'll give you that Congresswoman Waters may have given you something on appeal that may result in this whole trail being overturned", Cahill responded. Cahill denied the motion but called it "disrespectful to the rule of law and to the judicial branch" for elected officials to comment on the outcome of the case. "Their failure to do so is abhorrent, but I don't think it's prejudiced the jury".

Conservatives have seized on Waters' comments, saying she is inflaming tensions as Minneapolis looks to prevent looting and destruction that occurred after Floyd's death past year.

House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy said over the weekend he would be forced to take action against her if Pelosi failed to punish Waters herself.

Waters has come under sharp criticism in the past, including from fellow Democrats, for comments she has made about Republicans.

He tweeted: "I was shot because of this kind of risky rhetoric".

Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene said she would introduce a resolution to kick Waters out of the House, a highly unlikely scenario.

He said she was "passionate" and has "never advocated violence".

A message seeking comment from Waters' office was not immediately returned late Monday afternoon.

Waters has served in Congress since 1991 and is the chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee.

This is not the first time she has been accused of unsafe rhetoric.

"If you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd. And you tell them they're not welcome". She began focusing on policing issues in 1979 after the police shooting of a Black woman during a confrontation in Los Angeles over an unpaid gas bill and was a leading voice advocate for policing changes in the aftermath of the videotaped beating of Black motorist Rodney King by LAPD officers. "So I call it a rebellion".
