Kovit: Planning travel restrictions, the long weekend of May BC”

The province has now recorded 1,538 deaths related to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.

Meetings held April 12 between Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and hospitality industry leaders resulted in word emerging that evening it was likely the current ban on indoor dining would be upheld until later in May.

This includes the current restrictions on restaurants, pubs, bars and indoor group fitness activities.

Horgan says we have to take serious measures in order to get to the May long weekend and salvage our summer.

"Dr. Henry has been saying for months, months, months, stay in your territory, be in your community, "Horgan said".

Bookings from outside of health areas will be eliminated, and random traffic stops will be set up to help enforce the new measures.

"It will be conducted through random audits, unlike roadside checks or counter-attacks during the Christmas season", Horgan explained. "They will be random and there will be a fine given to anyone traveling outside of their region without a legitimate reason".

Signs discouraging travel will be posted at the border between Alberta and British Columbia.

The province says there are no checkpoints planned at this point.

"It is critical that we focus our efforts on continuing to do the things we know reduce transmission", said Dr. Henry Monday, emphasizing the need for B.C. residents to be "purposeful" with our in-person social interactions.

As of Friday, British Columbia will impose travel restrictions to prevent movement outside of health regions.

In addition to our age-based and worker programs, we are expanding vaccinations for people aged 40 and up who are now also eligible to receive their AstraZeneca vaccine at their local pharmacy.
