Medical examiner: Capitol officer died of natural causes”

Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick suffered two strokes and died of natural causes the day after he confronted rioters during the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, according to the chief medical examiner in Washington, D.C. "The District of Columbia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Francisco J. Diaz, MD, FACP, issued determinations on April 7 as to the cause and manner of death for four of those individuals and today issues the cause and manner of death of the remaining individual".

The circumstances of the 42-year-old officer's death have been subject to speculation ever since Sicknick collapsed the night of the attack on the Capitol.

The new findings mean it will be hard for federal prosecutors to bring homicide charges in connection with Mr Sicknick's death.

First reported by the Washington Post, the newly public ruling was revealed a little more than a month after two members of the pro-Trump mob, George Tanios and Julian Khater, were first charged with assaulting Sicknick by spraying him in the face with chemical irritants.

Diaz said Sicknick suffered two strokes at the base of the brain stem caused by a clot in an artery that supplies blood to that area of the body. Diaz also said there was no evidence of internal or external injuries.

Diaz told the Post he could not comment on whether Sicknick had a preexisting medical condition, citing privacy laws.

Five people died, including a woman who was shot by a police officer inside the Capitol. His remains were interred at Arlington National Cemetery.

Sicknick, 42, was sprayed with a chemical substance outside the Capitol at around 2:20 p.m. ET on January 6, the report said. The Justice Department had been investigating his death as a murder.

Two men were arrested in March and charged with the officer's death.

"Give me that bear s--", Khater said to Tanios on a recorded video, according to court documents. Khater was then seen holding a can of chemical spray, prosecutors say.

After it was discovered that Sicknick showed no signs of blunt trauma, some media outlets began speculating that he may have died as a result of a chemical irritant he inhaled after being sprayed by the rioters. "They took a sibling away from their brothers".
