Black Teen Shot Dead By US Police In Ohio”

Police shot and killed a black teenaged girl on Tuesday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio, just as the verdict was being announced in the trial for the killing of George Floyd.

Releasing police body-camera video of Tuesday's shooting in Ohio's capital hours later, the interim Columbus police chief, Michael Woods, said officers involved there were answering an emergency-911 call from someone who reported an attempted stabbing.

According to WTRF, the bureau is often tasked with investigating shootings that involve police officers.

She told the outlet that her niece had a knife, but said the girl had dropped the weapon before she was shot "multiple times" by a police officer. One family member said she was 15, while another said she was 16. No matter the circumstances, that family is in agony.

"Fast, quick answers can not come at the cost of accurate answers", Pettus told a late news conference with the police chief and mayor.

Pettus said if the law was broken the police officer will be held accountable.

Police showed bodycam footage at a news conference of an officer shooting the girl as she appeared to attempt to stab two people with a knife.

Officials responded to the location and, according to bodycam footage from the first officer on the scene, the officer approaches a group of individuals in the driveway outside a home. The caller reported a female was trying to stab them and then hung up.

Many chanted "Say her name", while others yelled "she was just a kid". "Yeah she had issues, but that's OK. She didn't deserve to die like a dog in the street".

The teen was not identified by police as they reach out to notify relatives.

Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther mourned the loss of the young victim but defended the officer's use of deadly force. Outside, a woman who told him she was the girl's grandmother was distraught, he said, repeating "they didn't have to shoot her, they didn't have to shoot her". "We do not know all of the details", Ginther said in a tweet.

Police also released a portion of the footage from the body camera worn by the officer who shot the teenager. "We are working to review it as soon as possible".

"We thought it was important to share with the community, to be transparent about this incident, to let them have some answers that we can provide tonight", said Woods.

A crowd had gathered Tuesday night (local time) at the scene on Legion Lane, which police had partially blocked off to traffic.
