The active cases in the country registered a steady increase for the 40th day in a row to cross the 20-lakh mark, comprising almost 13 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has dropped to 86 per cent.

The pandemic cases continued to increase in Uttar Pradesh, where 29,754 fresh infections were recorded, close to Sunday's record tally of 30,596.

On Tuesday, the health ministry reported 259,170 new infections nationwide - a sixth day over 200,000 and getting closer to the peak of almost 300,000 seen in the United States in January. The Russian capital was followed by St. Petersburg with 693 new cases, up from 687 the day before, and the Moscow Region with 586 new cases, up from 562 on Tuesday. The nationwide tally has reached 1.53 crore.

Amid a massive surge in COVID-19 cases, concerns over oxygen supply for coronavirus patients continue in the national capital on Wednesday, with Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia flagging the urgent need in both government and private hospitals across the city.

The health ministry said 1,761 people had died in the past day, raising India's toll to 180,530 - still well below the 567,538 reported in the United States, though experts believe India's actual toll far exceeds the official count. There are 85,575 active cases in Delhi.

A day after reporting a record 19,067 infections, Karnataka added 15,785 new cases, marking a high daily positivity rate of 12.8% with 1,23,212 tests. Its chairman D S Rana said, "6,000 cubic meters of it is left, which at the rate of current consumption will last till 1 am". Maharashtra saw the maximum casualties (351).

These states are Ladakh (UT), D&D & D&N, Tripura, Sikkim, Mizoram, Lakshadweep, Nagaland, A&N Islands and Arunachal Pradesh.
