Indonesian sub goes missing north of Bali”

An Indonesian submarine with 53 personnel on board has gone missing in deep waters during a training exercise, with a submarine rescue vessel from Singapore already on its way to assist in the search.

Reuters reported that Indonesian officials had called on nearby Australia and Singapore for assistance in the search for the KRI Nanggala-402, a German-made vessel.

An oil spill has been found near the missing submarine's earlier known position, Reuters said, quoting the Indonesian Defence Ministry.

Indonesia's military said it was searching for a submarine with 53 crew aboard after losing contact with the vessel during naval exercises off the coast of Bali on Wednesday.

The 43-year-old submarine, KRI Nanggala-402, was around 60 miles north of the resort island of Bali when contact was lost.

The submarine is thought to have sunk into a trough 700 meters (2,300 feet) deep while conducting a torpedo drill, according to local reports.

The military chief told Indonesia's Kompas media that contact was lost after the submarine had been given permission to dive.

The navy sent out an global distress signal, and "several countries have responded and are ready to help including Singapore, Australia and India", the ministry said.

'The navy is now searching for [the submarine], said First Admiral Julius Widjojono.

The Indonesian Cakra submarine KRI Nanggala sails out from the port in Cilegon, Banten, on October 5, 2017.

'We don't know yet whether the communication equipments were broken or the submarine has sunken.

Indonesia operates a fleet of five military submarines, including two built in Germany and three newer South Korean-built boats, according to Reuters.

Indonesia in the past operated a fleet of 12 submarines purchased from the Soviet Union to patrol the waters of its sprawling archipelago.
