Multiple injured in Long Island Stop & Shop shooting”

The person killed was a 49-year-old store employee, Ryder said. He said the man may be a current or former employee of the grocery store.

A man who police believe shot three people - killing one - on Tuesday is in custody, police said.

The shooting happened at a Stop & Shop grocery in the community of West Hempstead, about a 10-mile drive east of the New York City borough of Queens, officials said. He is said to have used a "small handgun", ABC News reported.

Police are urging local residents to remain indoors while the gunman is at large.

According to the Nassau County, N.Y. Police Department, an "active shooter situation" unfolded between 11:00 a.m. and noon Tuesday in an upstairs office area of the West Hempstead Stop & Shop, a regional grocery chain.

CBS2 points out that witnesses say they heard "five to six" gunshots on the second level of the store.

The NCPD has said that the suspect has not yet been apprehended.

There were around "a couple hundred" people inside the store, Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder told reporters.

Police identified the suspected gunman as Gabriel DeWitt Wilson and gave a date of birth for him indicating he is 31 years old.

Sources say there is a police presence on Terrace Avenue in Hempstead as the search continues for Wilson.

John Durso, president of Local 338 RWDSU/UFCW, a union that represents numerous workers at the store, said he was "devastated" by the shooting. "He is approx. 6'2" & wearing a black baseball hat and a black sweatshirt, & was last seen heading westbound on Hempstead Turnpike.

"They told us to just run and get out, and that's what we did", shopper Laura Catanese told News 12 Long Island.

"We are shocked and heartbroken by this act of violence that occurred at our store located at 50 Cherry Valley Road in West Hempstead, today", Reid said.

"Our hearts go out to the families of the victims, our associates, customers and the first responders who have responded heroically to this tragic situation", Reid said, adding that the store would be closed until further notice. At this time, we are cooperating fully with local law enforcement on the investigation.

Dozens of ambulances and police vehicles remain on the scene outside the store.
