Police shoot, kill teenage girl in Columbus

Police shoot, kill teenage girl in Columbus”

The shooting unfolded the same day that a 12-person jury panel in the trial of Derek Chauvin over last year's fatal arrest of George Floyd found Chauvin guilty on all three charges: second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Hundreds of protesters pushed past police barriers outside the headquarters and approached officers as city officials were showing the bodycam video inside.

A police officer then opened fire on the youth as she collapsed against a vehicle parked in the driveway. The video then shows what appears to be a kitchen knife lying on pavement near the teenager.

Earlier reports, including from The Daily Beast, cited the girl as being 15-years-old, according to a woman purporting to be the girl's aunt.

Police who answered the department's phone and officers on scene were not immediately able to provide details to The Associated Press. The shooting took place a short time later, according to police.

Member of Mother's of Murdered Columbus Children and other protestors gathered in the area of the shooting, with one person reportedly carrying a sign that read "enough is enough".

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was at the scene Tuesday night on the city's southeast side, The Columbus Dispatch reported. He and the city's public safety director, Ned Pettus, Jr, appealed for calm while the investigation proceeds and facts are uncovered in what he called "a devastating" loss of life.

"Fast, quick answers can not come at the cost of accurate answers", Pettus told a late news conference with the police chief and mayor.

"BCI is on the scene conducting an independent investigation.as they do with all CPD-involved shootings", Ginther said.

Pettus said if the law was broken the police officer will be held accountable.

"This afternoon a young woman tragically lost her life", Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther tweeted.

"But another young girl will still not be coming home tonight, he said, adding, "I ask everyone to pray for peace".

"We don't get to celebrate nothing", Taynor said through a megaphone of the Chauvin verdict, according to the Columbus Dispatch.
