What You Need to Know About Derek Chauvin's Sentence”

"Thank you, George Floyd, for sacrificing your life for justice", Pelosi said Tuesday at a press conference on Capitol Hill with members of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Floyd's death set off months of protests in the US and other countries condemning police brutality and systemic racism.

Jurors in Hennepin County District Court found the 45-year-old Chauvin guilty on all counts - second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

Attorney General Merrick Garland, pictured on April 8 at the White House, is announcing a civil investigation into possible patterns of discrimination and excessive use of force in the Minneapolis Police Department on Wednesday.

The Trump administration had opened a federal civil rights investigation in the case days after Floyd, a Black man, died last May after Chauvin pressed his knee on his neck for almost nine minutes while he was prone on his stomach.

The official had direct knowledge of the matter but was not authorized to speak publicly about the upcoming announcement, planned for Wednesday morning. It will also look into the department´s handling of misconduct allegations among other things, the person said.

The eyes of the U.S. - and the wider world - have been fixed on a courthouse in Minnesota, following the trial of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd in May 2020. By contrast, during the Obama years, the Justice Department conducted more than two dozen pattern or practice investigations.

But he says the trial underlines how much work remains to be done to combat systemic racism.

At least one viral social media post claimed that Chauvin - a 19-year veteran of the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) who was sacked after a video of his fatal encounter with Floyd went viral - was likely to spend "the rest of his life in prison".

"I can´t breathe.´ Those were George Floyd´s last words, ' Biden said". "We can't let those words die with him". We have to keep hearing those words.
