5 things to know about COVID-19 variants”

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said in its advisory: "Because of the current situation in India even fully vaccinated travellers may be at risk for getting and spreading Covid-19 variants and should avoid travel to India". While the USA placed India in the Level 4 - which is a very high category of Covid-19 levels - the United Kingdom added the country to its red list from which most travel is banned.

A case involving the "variant of interest" that originated in India - known as the B.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says it's under consideration in Canada, and travel restrictions are already in place in some countries.

But rather than banning travel from nations where variants have emerged, Tam said Canada has mostly opted to take a broader approach, instituting "layers of protection" against travellers from all countries. So far, more than 13-million vaccines have been delivered to provinces and more than 10.7-million have been administered.

In an interview on CTV News Channel's Power Play on Wednesday, Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said the government is monitoring the situation and is considering the tools at their disposal to prevent outbreaks from overseas travel, specifically from India.

According to the federal government, there have been 35 flights from India with at least one case of COVID-19 that have arrived in Canada in the last two weeks.

Currently, worldwide travellers heading to Canada are required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test before boarding, and are also required to take another test when they land. "Whether it's India or any other country, we are committed to doing what we can both at present and going forward to see to it that this virus is brought under control", he said.

House leader Paul Calandra said it's critical that the federal Liberals act now to prevent more variants from infiltrating Canada. "We must secure our borders", O'Toole said.

But the discovery in B.C. of a variant of COVID-19 associated with India has some wondering whether the flight rules need to be changed for the time being.

As of Tuesday, the federal government was reporting 67,417 cases of COVID-19 involving that variant.
