AstraZeneca vaccine benefits increase with age: European Union drug watchdog”

Dr. David Williams, Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health announced the province's first confirmed case of vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia or blood clot in a patient after receiving the AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD vaccine on Friday.

Ontario is reporting its first case of a rare blood clot in a person who received the Oxford-AstraZenenca COVID-19 vaccine. "Additional details will not be publicly released to protect the patient's privacy".

From over 1.15 million vaccine doses administered in the State, the HPRA has received 6,616 reports of suspected side effects, the vast majority described as mild to moderate, adding the benefits of the vaccines continue to outweigh the risks.

It recommended people be offered the AstraZeneca shot if they do not want to wait for an mRNA vaccine such as Pfizer or Moderna.

The advisory body issued its latest guidance on Friday after reviewing new provincial data on the level of risk now posed in Canada by COVID-19.

"The health and safety of Ontarians remains our top priority", Williams said in a statement.

Ontario expanded use of the shot to those 40 years of age and older earlier this week and has seen its daily vaccination numbers leap ahead since doing so.

"While these serious reactions remain extremely rare, we have a robust process in place to monitor for any adverse events and have taken steps to ensure that these events are identified and treated as quickly as possible".

Individuals who receive their first jab but subsequently become infected, however, will receive their vaccines as soon as they are fully recovered.
