Andrew Brown Jr.’s family: Police bodycam footage shows ‘execution’”

The account was the first description of the shooting of Andrew Brown Jr., who was killed by deputies serving drug-related search and arrest warrants. Several peaceful protests took place in the city last week following the shooting. The shooting sparked a public demand for the police body camera footage, though its release has been prevented so far given North Carolina law holds that only a court order can allow the release of such footage.

Cherry-Lassiter said the video was 20 seconds long and shows deputies shot at Brown as he sat in his vehicle with his hands on the steering wheel.

"They were shooting and saying 'Let me see your hands!' at the same time", Chantel Cherry-Lassiter, one of a team of lawyers for the family, told a news briefing on Monday.

When asked whether Brown was shot in the back, attorney Harry Daniels said, "Yes, back of the head".

Brown then backed out of the driveway as the officers continued firing and drove away, hitting a tree.

Lassiter, who watched the video multiple times and took notes, said shooting started as soon as the video started. She said she counted as many as eight deputies in the video, some wearing tactical uniforms and some in plainclothes. "This was an execution".

The family's lawyers also criticized local authorities for only showing 20 seconds of the video and only showing them footage from a single body camera.

"They're trying to hide something", attorney Benjamin Crump said. Sellers also claimed Cox used profanity during a meeting with attorneys and members of Brown's family.

Wooten and Cox did not respond to requests for comment.

As previously reported, deputies shot and killed him while attempting to issue an arrest warrant in Elizabeth City, North Carolina on Wednesday.

Seven deputies are now on leave following the shooting. If he gets that confirmation, the office would file for the judge to release the footage, Wooten said. "They only tell part of the story", he said. At one point, demonstrators blocking traffic on a heavily used roadway in the city, according to reports.

The footage depicted an "execution", she added.

Brown's aunt, Betty Banks, said the family was told that authorities did not find any drugs or weapons in Brown's vehicle or in his house. The document, which indicated the search was not completed, did not list anything found.

On Monday evening, hundreds of protesters marched through the city's downtown area, as some carried signs and chanted: "Release the tape!" A coalition of media organizations have sought the footage, and city officials plan to do so as well. "We only saw a snippet of the video", Crump said.

Officials in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, declared a state of emergency before the release of bodycam footage of the recent law enforcement-involved shooting of Andrew Brown Jr. "What a slap in the face", said Riddick, who lives in Hertford, about 15 miles southwest of Elizabeth City, according to WVEC. She said it left her in tears.

"It's the same thing that keeps happening", she said.
