Men Indicted On Federal Hate Crime Charges In Ahmaud Arbery Killing”

The three men charged at the state level with allegedly murdering Ahmaud Arbery, 25, had their legal exposure compound on Wednesday, with federal prosecutors indicting them with hate crimes, attempt kidnapping and other offenses.

"Travis and Gregory McMichael were also charged with one count each of using, carrying, and brandishing-and in Travis's case, discharging-a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence", the Justice Department said.

Catch up quick:"All three defendants have also been charged in a separate state proceeding with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and criminal attempt to commit a felony", the DOj noted.

On the one-year anniversary of his death, Arbery's mother filed a wrongful death lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Georgia, alleging that the McMichaels and Bryan were acting as surrogate police when he was killed.

Arbery, 25, a Black man, was killed while jogging in the neighborhood of Satilla Shores in Brunswick, Georgia, on February 23, 2020.

The McMichaels chased Arbery through a suburban neighborhood outside Brunswick, Ga., yelling at him, cutting off his jogging route with their truck and threatening him with guns.

Later, Gregory McMichael, a retired police officer, helped leak the video because he wanted "the public to know the truth", his attorney said in May.

The Justice Department alleges that the men "used force and threats of force to intimidate and interfere with Arbery's right to use a public street because of his race".

Arbery's mom said she welcomed the news of the federal charges, calling it "one step closer to justice".

Surveillance video appeared to capture Arbery entering a property under construction before the shooting, but he didn't take anything from the house, his family's lawyers and the homeowner's attorney have said.

"Mr. Bryan said that after the shooting took place before police arrival, while Mr. Arbery was on the ground, that he heard Travis McMichael make the statement, 'f--ing n--er, '" GBI agent Richard Dial testified.

Bryan's attorney, Kevin Gough, told NPR that he is disappointed with the Justice Department's decision to pursue federal charges.
