WNY COVID-19 numbers highest in the state

Some businesses are welcome to opt to keep capacity restrictions, but from the state level, those restrictions will be nearly entirely repealed, Cuomo said.

Cuomo says the 6-foot social distancing rule remains in place across the state in line with the CDC's guidance.

"More New Yorkers are getting vaccinated and hospitalizations are declining, which is good news, but we need New Yorkers to stay vigilant to make sure we don't lose any of the progress we've made", Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

The statewide positivity rate of COVID was 1.95 percent as of May 2, with 15,734,364 total doses of the vaccine administered as of Sunday.

Starting that date, houses of worship, bars and restaurants, museums, retail stores, gyms and fitness centers, amusement parks and family entertainment centers, hair salons, spas, barber shops, offices and more will no longer be subject to any limits on the number of people they can welcome inside, Cuomo said. Indoor bar seating, off-limits to customers in New York City since last March, will reopen on May 3.

Starting May 10, the outdoor gathering limit will increase from 200 to 500 people. Large-scale outdoor event venues will operate at 33 percent. The curfew on indoor service will not be lifted until May 31. The indoor social gathering limit rises to 250 people on May 19, up from 100.

"Every single day, NY state is moving forward in the footrace between the infection rate and the vaccination rate", Cuomo said in a statement. Social distancing, masks, and other applicable health protocols will still apply, including the requirement of attendee proof of full vaccination or recent negative COVID-19 test result.

The 30-second ad will be running on Cuomo Prime Time, as well as other CNN programs like New Day and The Situation Room, targeting key markets in New York City and Washington, DC.

The May 19 reopening preempts the plan New York Mayor Bill de Blasio outlined just days ago to re-open his city fully on July 1.

To assist restaurants in ramping back up, Cuomo said he would also end the curfew on travel by subway. Maintaining this progress is critical and in order to keep moving in a positive direction, New Yorkers must continue to take all the proper precautions.
