Multiple people reported trapped after rail overpass collapses in Mexico City”

One video shared on Twitter showed a bridge collapsing onto a busy road full of cars.

"So far we have 15 people who unfortunately lost their lives", Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum told reporters at the scene.

"For now the rescue has been suspended because the train is very weak". The overpass was about five meters above the road in southern Mexico City.

It is not known whether most of the dead were on the subway cars, or whether they were pedestrians or motorists caught below.

Hundreds of police and firefighters cordoned off the scene in the southern borough of Tlahuac, as desperate friends and relatives of people believed to be on the trains gathered outside the security perimeter.

Oscar López, 26, was searching for his friend, Adriana Salas, also 26.

The incident unfolded about 10.30pm local time.

The accident occurred as the metro train was traveling between the stations of Olivos and Tezonco, in the south of the city, EFE reported.

The collapse could represent a major blow the Mexican Foreign Relations Secretary Marcelo Ebrard.

"What has happened on the metro today is a awful tragedy", tweeted Mexican foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard.

'Of course, the causes must be investigated and responsibilities defined.

The latest accident comes at a time when Mexico is struggling to cope with the coronavirus pandemic, which has left more than 217,000 people dead in the country - one of the world's highest tolls.
