New Zealand Pauses 'Travel Bubble' With Australia Amid Coronavirus Outbreak In Sydney

New Zealand Pauses 'Travel Bubble' With Australia Amid Coronavirus Outbreak In Sydney”

NZ Covid Response Minister Chris Hipkins acknowledged the development would be frustrating for many who had global travel plans.

A new COVID-19 case has been recorded in the Sydney community.

"We believe this is a proportionate response to the risk we have ahead of us", NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian told reporters.

Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said genomic testing linked the latest cases with a returned traveller from the United States at a Darling Harbour quarantine facility.

Less than three weeks after launching a quarantine-free "travel bubble" between New Zealand and Australia, officials in Wellington, New Zealand's capital, announced Thursday that flights from Sydney would be temporarily suspended after new coronavirus cases were detected there.

However, there is a missing link between the traveller and the two cases, she revealed.

The country announced on Thursday it would suspend flights to NSW for 48 hours after a Sydney man and his wife tested positive for Covid-19.

NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet entered self-isolation on Thursday after he visited a restaurant at the same time as the infected person, classifying him as a close contact, his office said.

The man attended a number of venues across the city while potentially infectious, with a major public health alert now in place for a number of locations.

He has since returned a negative COVID-19 test.

Authorities are investigating whether the mystery case is genetically linked to anyone in the quarantine system or cases in other states, and are also checking which virus variant is involved.

The federal government is now under some pressure to overturn a temporary travel ban on travellers, including its own citizens, from COVID-ravaged India.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison, however, said the situation would be constantly reviewed.
