Gunman shoots dead six people at Colorado Springs birthday party”

A gunman has opened fire at a birthday party in the U.S. state of Colorado, killing six people and himself.

Authorities said the incident occurred shortly after midnight when the unidentified gunman, who is believed to be the boyfriend of a female victim, walked into a party attended by family, friends, and children in a mobile home park in Colorado Springs and started firing at guests.

"Upon arrival, officers located six deceased adults and one adult male with serious injuries who was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries", the statement said. Several kids were at the party but unharmed.

"This is something you hope never happens in your own community, in the place that you call home", Colorado Springs Police Chief Vince Niski said.

A motive has yet to be determined. Police say those children are now with family members.

Police blocked off the area, where a mobile crime lab was parked near the home.

Freddie Marquez, 33, said his mother-in-law was one of the victims and that he was at the party but left around 10:30pm on Saturday.

Nubia Marquez, along with her mother and brother, were celebrating their birthdays, her husband tells the Denver Post.

"I thought it was a thunderstorm", Reyes said.

Police brought children out of the trailer and put them into at least one patrol auto, she said, adding that the children were "crying hysterically".

The massacre took place about 110 km (70 miles) south of Denver and is the latest in a resurgence of mass shootings in the United States after such incidents seemed to recede during the height of coronavirus pandemic restrictions. That came less than a week after another 21-year-old gunman was accused of killing eight people at three Atlanta-area day spas. The Aurora shooter is serving a life sentence.

The El Paso County Coroner's Office will release the identifications of the victims and their official causes of death.

The killings are the latest gun-related murders to rock the US; President Joe Biden has called such shootings "an worldwide embarassment" andhas vowed to tighten restrictions on firearms.
