Alberta identifies 908 new COVID-19 cases, positivity rate of 9.1%”

For a period in early May, Alberta held the dubious distinction of having the highest active case rate anywhere in North America.

In Morinville, active cases dropped from 37 to 33 overnight, while Sturgeon County saw its active cases decrease from 73 to 71.

Across Alberta, another 812 cases of COVID-19 were diagnosed overnight, bringing the total to 17,675 active cases.

Case rates have dropped precipitously in recent days, however, with a week-over-week decline in new cases of 46 per cent.

Since the pandemic began more than a year ago, a total of 2,162 people have died from the virus in the province. There are now 15,502 active cases in the province, the fewest since April 14 and significantly below the third-wave peak of more than 25,000 active infections.

The number of hospitalizations in the province due to the virus continues to remain steady, decreasing by six people since Tuesday, to 685.

With the exception of deaths, all those numbers were down from last Saturday.

Almost 2.3 million doses of vaccine have been administered in Alberta so far. Pharmacies and clinics across the province have now given 2.46 million doses.

Alberta's chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said during a news conference Thursday the May long weekend could be the last one with the most stringent health measures in place if Albertans continue to follow the rules and drop the rate of spread of COVID-19. "Get vaccinated, stay safe, and please keep following the rules", said Hinshaw.

Just over 50 per cent of Albertans aged 12 and up have received at least one dose of vaccine, and seven per cent are now considered fully immunized after receiving their second dose.
