DeSantis signs bill banning social media 'de-platforming'

DeSantis signs bill banning social media 'de-platforming'”

While Floridians have the right to block anyone, it's not the role of Big Tech to censor, said DeSantis.

"Florida is the first state to hold Big Tech accountable by empowering each and every Floridian silenced by arbitrary corporate censorship to fight back".

Indeed, Twitter has come under fire for taking sharp action against former President Trump, beginning with restricting and removing his posts, while allowing Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has essentially called for the genocide of Israel - calling the Jewish state a "terrorist garrison" - to continue to tweet. Numerous bills have died, but a proposal is still being debated in Texas.

The Florida law makes it illegal to bar a candidate for state office for more than 14 days, in a move that would seem to outlaw the kind of permanent ban the social media platforms applied to Trump's accounts. Google and Facebook did not immediately offer comments on the signing of the bill.

Twitter declined to comment. It also protects against the removal of politicians from any social media platform and opens the companies up to fines for doing so. Republicans have accused companies like Twitter and Facebook of censoring conservative thought.

The law says the platforms can not take down or otherwise prioritize content from a "journalistic enterprise" that reaches a certain size.

"Florida is trying to force a few large platforms to host speech they otherwise wouldn't".

Of note: Companies are exempt from the law if they own a theme park or another type of entertainment venue bigger than 25 acres.

Florida Monday became the first state in the U.S.to broadly regulate social media platforms' moderation of user speech online. The law also prohibits the companies from stopping media outlets from posting to their platforms based on the content of the outlets' articles, or limiting the reach of those articles. "By carving out companies like Disney and Universal, Florida's legislature revealed its anti-tech fervor and true intent to punish social media for allegations of anti-conservative bias". Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed into law new restrictions on voting, as did DeSantis in Florida, and Texas Republicans are poised to soon pass the nation's biggest rollback of voting rights.

Democrats opposed the bill and defended the right of social media companies, as private entities, to control the flow of information on their platforms.

"I think what we're really witnessing is Orwellian", DeSantis said last month.
