India passes 300,000 Covid-19 deaths as 'black fungus' spreads”

India passed 300,000 confirmed coronavirus deaths on Monday, with fatalities remaining high despite the country flattening out the number of new cases in its devastating pandemic wave.

Hundreds of villagers broke Covid lockdown in India to attend a funeral for a horse as the country's official death toll topped 300,000 today.

Fresh COVID-19 infections in India dipped to 2,22,315, the lowest in round 38 days, pushing the total tally of coronavirus cases to 2,67,52,447, while the death toll crossed the 3-lakh mark.

On the other hand, India's COVID-19 active caseload decreased to 30,27,925, with a net decline of 1,01,953 cases being recorded in the total active caseload.

A deadly second wave in recent weeks has overwhelmed the country's healthcare system, with hospitals struggling to cope with the influx of patients and with critical drugs and oxygen running out.

Besides, 6,09,11,756 and 98,18,384 beneficiaries aged 45 to 60 years have been administered the first and second dose respectively, while 5,66,45,457 and 1,82,62,665 beneficiaries of more than 60 years old have taken the first and second dose. The toll hit 200,000 deaths in late April.

However, Professor Susan Hopkins, PHE's COVID-19 strategic response director, said the data trend was "quite clear" and was heading in the "right direction".

It appears to have already taken a ghastly toll in the country's vast rural areas, where a majority of the people live and where health care is limited.

In rural villages, fever and breathlessness took people before they were even tested for coronavirus.

It has prompted concerns that they are the remains of Covid-19 victims.

More than 1.80 crore COVID-19 vaccine doses are still available with the states and UTs and they will receive over 48 lakh doses in the next three days, the Union Health Ministry said on Monday.

Ten states-Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Assam-reported 76.66 per cent of the 2,59,551 new cases registered in a day, the ministry said.

The world's largest vaccine-producing nation has fully inoculated just over 41.6 million people, or only 3.8% of its almost 1.4 billion population.
