Italian cable vehicle crash kills nine, injures two children”

Rescuers work by the wreckage of a cable auto after it collapsed near the summit of the Stresa-Mottarone line in the Piedmont region, northern Italy.

Italy's alpine rescue service said a call had first come just after midday, adding that the cable vehicle was lying "crumpled" in the woods and two children were taken by helicopter to a paediatric hospital in the nearby city of Turin.

The gondola, on a cableway that takes visitors up a mountain from near the shore of Lake Maggiore, plunged to the ground on Sunday, killing all aboard apart from a 5-year-old Israeli boy, who suffered multiple broken bones and is in critical condition. It appears the cable gave way, and walkers saw it happen.

Normally the cable auto has a capacity of 40 people but due to social distancing measures, the number was reduced.

The cable vehicle plummeted to the ground and then tumbled down the slope.

"Our teams are still pulling bodies out", Cari added.

Premier Mario Draghi offered his condolences to the families of the victims "with a particular thought about the seriously injured children and their families".

The ill-fated cable auto started running again a month ago after a long break due to the pandemic, the cableway's website says. Each cable auto can usually hold about 35 passengers.

"The police are at the scene of the incident and are trying to identify the people". She acknowledged the transport crime was an unusual hypothesis, but justified it by recalling that a cable vehicle up and down a mountain is a form of public transportation.

The Stresa-Mottarone lift had only recently re-opened following the gradual lifting of coronavirus restrictions.

The service first began running in August 1970 and the journey takes 20 minutes.

According to Rainews24, the cable auto fell 100 metres before it reached the peak of Mottarone mountain, which is nearly 1,500-metres high.

The dual cable system is split into two sections, just over two kilometres between Stresa and Alpino and another three kilometres between Alpino and Mottarone.

Transport Minister Enrico Giovannini visited the site Monday and announced a commission of inquiry to investigate the "technical and organizational causes" of the accident, while prosecutors will focus on any criminal blame.

"We are trying to understand what has happened, but it is a truly bad tragedy".

The line is popular with tourists and locals alike to scale Mottarone, which reaches a height of 1491 metres and overlooks several picturesque lakes and the surrounding Alps of Italy's Piedmont region.

The mountain hosts a small amusement park, Alpyland, that has a children's rollercoaster, and the area also has mountain bike paths and hiking trails.
