Santa Clara County sheriff's spokesman deputy Russell Davis said that he can not specify the number of dead and wounded or describe how the suspect died. Davis said there were multiple injuries.

Less than an hour later, the sheriff's office reported the alleged shooter was down.

VTA Board Chairperson Glenn Hendricks said the shooting occurred in the rail yard but not in the operations control center.

A Fox News affiliate said the shooting - which was initally reported before 7:00 am local time (1400 GMT) - had taken place at a union meeting, citing the mother of an employee who escaped unharmed.

The Younger Avenue address is a light rail yard of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), which provides rail, bus and various shuttle services to the booming Bay Area suburb and technology hub. "I could not be more proud of the VTA organization".

"Our hearts are pained for the families of those we have lost in this horrific shooting", he tweeted. The shooter is deceased, and more information will be provided at 9:30am. Liccardo further added that a reunification center has been established for families at the County Building at 70 Hedding St., near 1st street.

According to CBS News in San Francisco, at least six people were killed, but the number has not yet been confirmed by police.

He earlier tweeted that the facility had been evacuated, with police calling on locals to avoid the area while the investigation was still ongoing.
