New York City prosecutors form grand jury on Trump criminal probe”

New York-New York prosecutors have called a special grand jury to examine evidence of a criminal investigation into former President Donald Trump's commercial transactions, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Vance has been working on the investigation for around two years covering hush-money paid to females on Trump's behalf, tax practices, property valuations and others.

The office of Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance has been investigating the Trump Organization over allegations of fraudulent actions related to tax and other business matters.

Wrapping up his 12-year tenure then, Vance confirmed earlier this year that he will not seek reelection, and the grand jury's charging decision could be the last major development of his more than decade-long post. It will also look into the donations the Trump empire has made to evade tax.

Prosecutors have issued subpoenas using a previously appointed grand jury and have gathered evidence in most of the two years of investigation.

The Trump Organization's longtime chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg has been named in multiple reports as a pressure point, eyed by Manhattan prosecutors as someone who could potentially cooperate against the former president.

"This is purely political and threatens about 75 million voters who supported me in the presidential election, and it's a very partisan Democratic Party", Trump said in a statement.

"We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan DA", Mr Levy said.

Democrat James said her office is also continuing a civil investigation into Trump.

Trump's ex-personal lawyer Michael Cohen ― jailed for tax evasion and violating campaign finance laws ― was one of his closest henchmen before turning against his former boss and deciding to cooperate with prosecutors. An election next month is all but certain to determine who that will be. The attorney general's office deposed the former president's son Eric Trump last October, and though the grilling was confidential, James is known to be looking into the books of the Trump Organization's Seven Springs estate in Westchester (which Eric Trump has described as "our compound"). His former daughter-in-law, Jen Weisselberg, is cooperating with both inquiries.

On Tuesday, ABC News reported that potential witnesses have recently been contacted about appearing before the grand jury.
