Biden order to review COVID-19 origin revives conspiracy theories”

"We're continuing to work with health experts to keep pace with the evolving nature of the pandemic and regularly update our policies as new facts and trends emerge". "While the pandemic is still causing great damage in today's world and the worldwide community is expecting greater coordination among countries, some people are turning to their old playbook", said the spokesperson for the embassy in a statement.

After the report's release, the US along with 13 other countries including Australia, Japan and South Korea issued a joint statement voicing "concerns regarding the recent WHO-convened study in China", saying the delegation lacked access to complete original data and samples.

Facebook has reversed its policy banning posts suggesting the Covid-19 was man-made, on the heels of renewed debate over the origins of the virus which first emerged in China. The claims that the virus came from the lab was one often pushed by former President Donald Trump, though he never provided evidence.

Washington's frustration has mounted in recent weeks over what it sees as insufficient cooperation from China into the global investigation.

Earlier this week, USA government sources familiar with intelligence reporting and analysis said a still-classified US intelligence report circulated during former President Donald Trump's administration alleged that three researchers at China's Wuhan Institute of Virology became so ill in November 2019 that they sought hospital care.

He ordered intelligence agencies to "redouble their efforts" and report to him again in 90 days.

The move followed President Joe Biden's directive to U.S. intelligence agencies to investigate competing theories on how the virus first emerged - through animal contact at a market in Wuhan, China, or through accidental release from a research laboratory in the same city. The first known cases emerged in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019.

The President revealed the US Intelligence Community has "coalesced around two likely scenarios" but has not reached a definitive conclusion.

A World Health Organization report earlier this year said the most likely origin scenario was that the virus spread to humans from bats through an unspecified intermediary animal.

Representative Adam Schiff, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, called on China to be forthcoming and for "premature or politically-motivated conclusions" to be avoided.

It was the only one of the four scenarios that the team did not recommend scientists investigate further.

In late March, the World Health Organization had released a report on the COVID-19 origin-tracing after an extensive joint study with Chinese scientists.

Over the past year, the lab leak hypothesis has gone from being widely dismissed as a conspiracy theory to being seriously considered by the science community. The report said there was "no reporting of Covid-19 compatible respiratory illness during the weeks/months prior to December 2019, and no serological evidence of infection in workers through SARS-CoV-2-specific serology-screening". "Such study and investigation shall be full, transparent and evidence-based, and shall get to the bottom to make everything clear", added the statement. Feng Zijing, Deputy Director-General of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, also an expert on the joint WHO-China team, said on March 26, that the source-tracing work of the WHO-China team in Wuhan has been finalized with a consensus. "I still believe that the most likely scenario is that this was a natural occurrence", Fauci said.
