Melbourne lockdown leaves Supercars teams in limbo

Melbourne lockdown leaves Supercars teams in limbo”

The pause was reviewed daily, but Director General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said it would be formally reviewed after 48 hours "because it gives us enough time to provide further advice whether a further extension is warranted".

Hipkins said everything would be done to make sure those impacted by today's legal notification would be notified.

He said he received harrowing calls from hundreds of people, including one who said they liquidated their business to put food on the table, almost lost their house, and lost two friends from suicide in the space of one week.

Five of the six new cases are linked to a finance firm in Port Melbourne where one infected person works.

Anyone who arrives from Victoria must comply with the seven-day stay-at-home order and will only be able to leave for essential shopping, medical care, caregiving, outdoor exercise, and essential work or education if this can not be done from home.

"We are considering whether further restrictions should be put in place".

The number of cases had grown to 34, with 150 exposure sites across the city and "over 10,000" contacts identified so far - a number expected to only increase.

The Victorian infections have been linked through genomic sequencing to the case of a Melbourne man who contracted the virus while quarantining in South Australia, before travelling to Victoria where he tested positive. An open door at the Adelaide quarantine hotel has been identified as the likely source of transmission.

It comes after a number of restrictions were introduced for Greater Melbourne on Tuesday evening, including gathering limits of five people at homes and 30 in public and mandatory masks indoors.

A protracted lockdown to control a second wave outbreak in Victoria a year ago forced more than a dozen Melbourne-based professional sports teams to play away from home for several months to complete their seasons.

Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania have all closed their border to Victoria, or parts of the state, as well.

Others described accounts of a grandmother who was banned from visiting her first grandchild, a child who had stopped talking, people so depressed they can not leave their houses, a schoolchild so depressed they refused to eat, and a woman afraid that her son was a suicide risk.

"If things worsen and the (travel) bubble isn't reinstated then we will look to get some kind of travel exemption... so we will see how the week plays out", Rebels boss Baden Stephenson told Australian Associated Press. That's in addition to those that travelled to NZ since the 11th of May.

In Perth, testing is being imposed on Victorian arrivals.

The game was switched to Sydney from New Zealand's mountain resort Queenstown after New Zealand banned travel from Victoria.

The form is to check if border crossers have attended a venue of concern.
