Victorian COVID-19 lockdown set for a week

Victorian COVID-19 lockdown set for a week”

Restaurants, pubs and cafes can provide takeaways only.

In a statement, Merlino said: "It's clear more than ever, this virus isn't going away and vaccines are the only way we'll ever get back to normal". These are for food and supplies, authorised work, care and caregiving, exercise and getting vaccinated. "When we see a member become infected, nearly all the household is infected", he said.

A cluster first linked to a leak in the hotel quarantine system in neighbouring South Australia has now spread to 26 positive cases, while thousands of people have been identified as close contacts.

Some 10,000 primary and secondary contacts of those confirmed cases have been identified, with that cohort required to quarantine or test and isolate. Here in Victoria, we're seeing not only how quick it is, but how contagious it is as well.

"If people get vaccinated, it keeps our community safe".

The number of cases grew considerably in the past 24 hours after Victoria posted 11 new infections today.

Mr Merlino said the "circuit breaker" lockdown was a reminder for people eligible to get the vaccine to do so.

Visitors to aged care facilities will be banned except for limited reasons, while visitors to hospitals will be restricted to those supporting a partner during birth, a parent accompanying a child, or end of life reasons. Sadly, we have one of those people in an ICU, on a ventilator, in not a very good way.

Shops, banks, petrol stations and pharmacies will remain open, while schools will be closed but children of key workers and vulnerable children will still need to attend. Masks must be worn outside the home.

Australia has recorded about 30,000 Covid-19 cases to date - the vast majority in Victoria during last year's devastating second wave.

Queensland has asked its residents to reconsider all travel to Victoria, especially Melbourne, and anyone who has been in the City of Whittlesea since May 11 will be refused entry.

One helpful outcome of the outbreak is that there has been an upsurge in Victorians getting vaccinated with 15, 858 people receiving their jab on Tuesday, whereas the previous average daily uptake was less than 6, 300.

Also under pressure over failing to meet initial vaccine delivery targets - with about 3.7 million vaccination doses administered so far in a population of 25 million - the government has pledged additional batches will be sent to Victoria in the coming weeks.

"If we had an alternative to hotel quarantine for this particular variant of concern, we would not be here today".

"We need you to make a booking, so I really encourage everyone, if you are eligible, get vaccinated, " he said.

From Friday morning, Victoria will expand the eligibility for vaccinations, with people in the 40 to 49-year-old age group able to receive the Pfizer jab at state-run vaccination sites.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison spoke to reporters this afternoon saying Victorians again faced a "challenge and a battle".
