Partisan disputes delay sweeping China tech bill in U.S. Senate

Partisan disputes delay sweeping China tech bill in U.S. Senate”

The motion needed 60 votes to pass.

Last week, the House passed the bill 252-175, with 35 Republicans joining Democrats.

Democrats and some moderate Republicans had called for a commission to probe the events up to and including January 6, when hundreds of supporters of Trump, a Republican, stormed the Capitol, fighting with police, urging violence against lawmakers and delaying the formal certification of President Joe Biden's election victory.

Collins was among six Republicans to move forward with a vote on the commission.

She said the party needed to consider whether "everything is just one election cycle after another" or "are we going to acknowledge that as, as a country that is based on these principles of democracy that we hold so dear".

There are already two Senate committees investigating the events of that day, and another in the House, and the FBI, Capitol Police, and other agencies are continuing their investigations, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer wanted a special commission, which opponents said would unnecessarily continue the political divide.

According to the Washington Post, Collins had a visibly angry reaction, confronting Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY, and accusing him of undermining the vote by failing to declare ahead of time that he and the Democrats would back her changes, if the measure to take up the bill advanced.

The desire for a hard line in dealings with China is one of the few truly bipartisan sentiments in the deeply divided U.S. Congress, which is narrowly controlled by President Joe Biden's fellow Democrats. CNN and Politico report that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell privately lobbied his Republican colleagues to oppose the commission earlier this week.

The Associated Press reports that the vote on the commission was scheduled to take place on Thursday evening but was eventually bumped to Friday after Republicans voiced opposition to another bill.

Republicans did not defend these positions on the Senate floor before or after the vote.

The commission, if established, would have consisted of five Republicans and five Democrats. Mitt Romney, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Bill Cassidy, Ben Sasse and Rob Portman - voted to advance the measure. Susan Collins of ME has said she would offer amendments to the bill passed by the House.
