Israeli strikes in Gaza may be war crimes: United Nations rights chief

Israeli strikes in Gaza may be war crimes: United Nations rights chief”

Earlier Thursday, the UN Human Rights Council made a decision to create an open-ended worldwide investigation into violations surrounding the latest Gaza violence, and into the "systematic" abuses in the Palestinian territories and inside Israel.

Thousands of Hamas fighters held a military parade Friday in Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip, a week after a ceasefire with Israel took effect in the devastated coastal enclave.

A prisoner swap could be on the horizon, after Hamas spokesman Abdelatif al-Qanou, said Hamas is also open to discussing a prisoner swap with Israel.

The peace-building plans have come after Egypt successfully brokered a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Gaza, which killed 354 Palestinians and 12 Israelis during the weeks-long fight.

After visiting Israel this week, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken told Axios that he warned Israeli leaders that forcing more Palestinian families from their homes in East Jerusalem or future confrontations at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound could fuel further "tension, conflict, and war".

This travesty makes a mockery of worldwide law, Benjamin Netanyahu said.

Palestinian foreign minister Riyad al Maliki was among those expected to address the session, as was Meirav Eilon Shahar, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva.

"Pakistan stands in solidarity with the Palestinian people and shares the worldwide community's expectation for effective implementation of this resolution to ensure respect for global law as well as for rights and dignity of the people of Palestine", the statement read.

A vote on the draft resolution was likely at the end of the session, which is largely virtual.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh is expected to visit Cairo later this week.

Hamas presented a list from the Health Ministry identifying women and children who died. The list has not been independently verified, but numerous names were already well known.

Other COIs, like the one on Syria, need their mandates renewed every year.

Twenty of the council's 47 members were among the 66 countries that backed holding the special session. Subsequently, the session was held yesterday (Thursday), where the resolution was adopted.

Hamas has held several post-ceasefire rallies across the devastated Gaza Strip, including one Thursday in Khan Yunis and also in the south of the Israeli-blockaded territory.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Tanju Bilgic in a statement called Matthias Schmale's remarks "incorrect, unfortunate and extremely risky". He later apologised for his comments and said they were taken out of context and without the background of his criticism of Israeli aggression.

"According to UNRWA's daily status reports on these attacks, 19 of the children who lost their lives were students of UNRWA schools", he added.
