Joe Manchin panned over op-ed against For the People Act”

Democratic senator says he won't vote for the biggest U.S. election law review in at least one generation, against his party and the White House, and legislation fails nearly after party line approval Inside the house that said it virtually guarantees that.

"Manchin is not pushing us closer to bipartisanship, he is doing the work of the Republican Party by being an obstructionist, just like they've been since the beginning of Biden's presidency", he added.

Democrats saw their majority in the House of Representatives cut to a small margin in the November 2020 elections, although they won an effective Senate majority.

Despite Manchin's characterization of the measure as "partisan", a recent survey by Data for Progress found that some of the major changes proposed under the For the People Act are popular with Republican voters.

Federal law, which Mr. Manchin opposes, is the minimum standard for early voting, which was widespread before the official election date on November 3, and mail voting, which invalidates some of the state's Republican voting laws.

The bill would require states to expand mail-in voting, which was used widely in last year's presidential election because of the coronavirus pandemic, and it would also lengthen the hours of in-person balloting.

Manchin said he would throw his support behind an alternative voting bill that has received broader bipartisan support, called the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Biden also seemed to call out Manchin and Sinema for stalling action on voting measures, though he has not said he wants to end the filibuster.

The voting rights legislation would nullify many GOP-led voting restrictions passed in the states.

"My Republican colleague, Sen".

Democrats have said the federal legislation is necessary, especially to ensure the voting rights of minorities, while accusing Republicans of trying to limit such voting because Blacks overwhelmingly vote for Democrats.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) told Democrat colleagues in a memorandum that he will force a Senate vote on the sweeping election reform bill "that is essential to defending our democracy, reducing the influence of dark money and powerful special interests, and stopping the wave of Republican voter suppression happening in states across the country". "We haven't given up", Biden said. "I'm going to fight like heck with every tool at my disposal for its passage".

Kentucky Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell has promised to thwart election bills that he considers to be excessive government intervention in the state's election system.

The only Democratic senator who has refused to co-sponsor the For the People Act, Manchin wrote Sunday that he will vote against the bill this month because it has advanced through Congress without Republican support. The legislation would restrict partisan gerrymandering of congressional districts, eliminate hurdles to voting and bring transparency to a campaign finance system that allows wealthy donors to anonymously bankroll political causes. Manchin's defection all but guarantees the legislation will fail in the Senate after it passed largely down party lines in the House.

Manchin said lawmakers should instead focus on activating the groundbreaking voting rights law that was weakened by the 2013 Supreme Court ruling. However, following President Donald Trump's false allegations about the 2020 presidential election, the urgency increased and a riot broke out in the Capitol on January 6.
