‘America is back’: Brussels upbeat on eve of Biden’s Europe trip”

He condemned Biden's failure to stymie development of a major Russian pipeline, and urged the USA president to meet with him before meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Geneva on June 16, the final stop on Biden's upcoming European tour. He will try to improve relations after they soured under former President Donald Trump.

"The trip, at its core, will advance the fundamental thrust of Joe Biden's foreign policy to rally the world's democracies to tackle the greatest challenges of our time", White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters at a briefing on Monday. The standoff has heated up in recent months as Russian Federation amassed a large military force along the Ukrainian border.

Putin and Biden are to have a summit in Geneva on June 16, a meeting that comes amid soaring tensions in Russia-U.S. ties that have hit post-Cold War lows after Russia's 2014 annexation of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula, accusations of Moscow's interference in U.S. elections, hacking attacks and other issues.

Biden is scheduled to return to Washington after concluding his summit with Putin next Wednesday.

Sullivan said Biden is intentionally having the sitdown after consulting with and building support among democratic allies during the G7 and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meetings, in order to come into the meeting with "the wind at his back".

"There is simply a lot we have to work through", he said.

He said a rising China with its military buildup poses a problem because "they don't share our values".

On Russia, Stoltenberg said, "we agree on the dual-track approach, meaning deterrence, defense and dialogue with Russia". During meetings and conversations with world leaders, President Biden will stress the importance of working with allies to confront challenges presented by Russian Federation and China. The relationship between the United States and Russian Federation is about verification instead of trust, he added.

In an interview conducted remotely on Friday with the online Axios news site, Zelenskiy implored Biden to meet with him "at any moment at any spot on the planet" prior to the USA president's visit to Geneva, Switzerland.

According to Sullivan, he also said he hoped the G7 nations would come up with an "action plan" to increase their collective defenses against ransomware attacks and deal with the challenges posed by cryptocurrency, which, he said, "lies at the core of how these ransom transactions are played out".

The eight-day trip will start Wednesday in the United Kingdom, where Biden will visit American troops stationed there and then meet Prime Minister Boris Johnson, ahead of a G7 summit in Carbis Bay, a seaside resort, on Friday and Saturday.

Sullivan said the Putin summit was going ahead "not despite our countries' differences" but "because of our countries' differences".

"Who knows at this point", he said.
