Eligibility for second dose of COVID vaccine changing Thursday

Eligibility for second dose of COVID vaccine changing Thursday”

The Biden administration plans to purchase 500 million doses of BioNTech/Pfizer coronavirus vaccine to distribute to other nations, significantly adding to its ongoing efforts to inoculate populations around the world, according to three people familiar with the plans.

Two hundred million doses - enough to fully protect 100 million people - would be shared this year, with the balance to be donated in the first half of 2022, sources said.

The administration of President Joe Biden is buying 500 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine to distribute among other countries, U.S. media reported Wednesday citing people familiar with the matter. The program is led by the World Health Organization and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI).

The White House declined to comment, but a person familiar with the deal said the White House's COVID-19 response team had been negotiating its terms over the last four weeks.

The information is written on the card given out at the time of the first dose.

The White House has also directed doses to allies including South Korea, Taiwan and Ukraine. Moderna did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The White House has been under mounting pressure to boost donations of COVID-19 shots to other countries.

The administration is also using the US vaccine supply as a tool to counter Chinese and Russian vaccine diplomacy.

The Times said Biden would appear with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla to make the announcement.
