Trump's DOJ Investigated Schiff, Swalwell, Aides On Intelligence Panel”

The Justice Department under former US President Donald Trump seized data from the accounts of at least two members of the House Intelligence Committee in 2018 as part of an aggressive crackdown on leaks related to the Russian Federation investigation and other national security matters, according to a committee official and two people familiar with the investigation.

Eric Swalwell, whose data was seized by the Trump administration as part of a leak probe, on Friday said former President Donald Trump "weaponized" the Justice Department to dig into the private communications of his political opponents.

The New York Times reported that the DOJ seized from Apple the phone metadata of two Democrats, Reps.

"The review will examine the Department's compliance with applicable DOJ policies and procedures, and whether any such uses, or the investigations, were based on improper considerations", said Horowitz in the statement.

Schiff, while not confirming he was a target of the investigation, called for a probe by the Justice Department's inspector general into "this and other cases that suggest the weaponization of law enforcement by a corrupt president".

Congressman Eric Swalwell told CNN on Thursday he was the second Democratic lawmaker on the committee who was targeted. "It is increasingly apparent that those demands did not fall on deaf ears", Schiff said in a statement.

Though leak investigations are routine, current and former officials at the Justice Department and in Congress said seizing data on lawmakers is almost unheard-of outside of corruption investigations. Trump was ultimately impeached by the House as a result of that investigation.

In their joint statement Friday, Schumer and Durbin said that in addition to Barr, Sessions and other officials testifying, the Justice Department "must provide information and answers to the Judiciary Committee, which will vigorously investigate this abuse of power".

The Justice Department told the intelligence panel then that the matter had not transferred to any other entity or investigative body, the committee official said, and the department confirmed that to the committee again on Thursday.

Democrats swiftly condemned the moves, news of which followed three recent disclosures to national media organizations that the Trump Justice Department had secretly sought reporters' phone and email records in an effort to identify the sources of leaks.

The House Intelligence Committee was later instrumental in the impeachment inquiry into President Trump's dealings with Russian Federation. "It is exactly what they thought he would change, and he was the ugliest example of the problem I've ever seen". Senate Democrats also threatened to subpoena Bill Barr and Jeff Sessions, who were both attorneys general during the Trump administrations, to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The Justice Department also seized Apple data from the accounts of committee aides and family members, the Times said.
