No change in age recommendation for use of vaccine”

VITT is a rare blood clot that has occurred in some people who received the AstraZeneca shot.

After another change on recommendations from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) for people who received a first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, some Windsor residents remain unconcerned with their choice to get the second dose of that vaccine.

Alexandra Hilkene, a spokesperson for Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott, said AstraZeneca vaccine is now available for those who wish to receive it as a second dose, with informed consent, through select pharmacy and primary care channels.

The provincial health officer said latest studies show mixing AstraZeneca with an mRNA vaccine could increase immunity to COVID-19.

NACI's new advice did not change the Ontario government's position on AstraZeneca, with the province saying Friday that those who got a first shot of it could decide whether to get the same vaccine or a different mRNA shot as a second dose. Now NACI says everyone should always get the mRNA vaccines first, unless they are allergic to them.

But some continue to share that they are comfortable getting two doses of AstraZeneca.

The recommendation is also a result of "emerging evidence of a potentially better immune response from this mixed vaccine schedule" said NACI.

From the beginning, the Commission has claimed that it launched the emergency legal procedure, which started at the Brussels Court of First Instance last month, simply to secure the vaccine doses that European Union member countries were promised.

As Europe battled the COVID-19 pandemic and looked to AstraZeneca for a much-needed vaccine, officials there took an unusual step earlier this year of suing the company over supply shortcomings. Almost 66% of the population had received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine as of June 16, although just 15% of the population is fully vaccinated.

A total of 89,042 doses of AstraZeneca have been administered in Saskatchewan to date.

The donation won't cost Canada anything, and will be on top of the 44 million doses Canada has purchased directly from Moderna. All three have been approved for safe use in Canada.

The court ruled that AstraZeneca would face fines of 10 euros ($12) per dose if it did not deliver 80 million doses by the end of September. The World Health Organization has made repeated pleas for wealthier countries to share more doses with developing countries, some of whom have vaccinated very few people at all. Weeks said, noting he took what was offered at the time.

We would expect the number of people that are fully vaccinated with Sinopharm to be higher than with AstraZeneca eventually.
