Tornado Leaves Trail of Destruction in Chicago Suburb

Tornado Leaves Trail of Destruction in Chicago Suburb”

Severe thunderstorms tore through the Chicago area on Sunday night after the National Weather Service said a "confirmed large and extremely risky tornado" had touched down in a western suburb of the city, causing damage. The injuries reportedly weren't life-threatening.

Officials in the nearby town of Woodridge said a tornado touched down late Sunday, and a damage assessment was underway. There were no reports of significant injuries in the community.

"We have no power at all". Photos from the village of Woodbridge showed a damaged fence, toppled trees and a bent street sign.

The worst was reported in Naperville and Woodridge, Illinois, about 25 miles west-southwest of downtown Chicago just after 11 p.m., where National Weather Service radar detected a tornado debris signature, an indication of debris lofted by a tornado.

"This is a unsafe situation!" the agency tweeted. She said several gas leaks were reported in Naperville and the crew made a door-to-door canvassing to shut down the line. A violent storm left serious damage and power outages on the route across the southwestern suburbs.

"The severe threat has diminished/ended for most of the Chicago metro area".

Late Sunday and early Monday, severe thunderstorms also brought gusting winds and drenching rains to parts of MI.
