Multi-storey building partially collapses in Miami”

One person has died following a partial building collapse in Miami, according to officials with the Miami-Dade Police.

Rescuers pulled 35 people from the wreckage, officials said.

"The building is literally pancaked", Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett said at an early-morning news conference.

Work is now being done on the building's roof, but Mr Burkett said he did not see how that could have caused the collapse.

Per the Miami Herald, part of the 12-story Champlain Towers South condo facing the beach on Collins Avenue crumbled around 2am on Thursday.

At least 51 people remained unaccounted for at midday, Miami-Dade County Commissioner José Díaz told reporters.

Some 15 families walked out of the building alive on their own and were put up in a local hotel, according to Burkett.

Burkett said roof work was being done on the building, but added that roofing work goes on in other buildings and he did not see how that could have caused the building to collapse. Authorities did not said what the cause may be.

During a press conference on Thursday, officials said that 10 people were treated for injuries following the collapse.

The collapse left a number of flats in the still-standing part of the building exposed.

Television footage showed bunk beds, tables and chairs still inside the damaged apartments. One man whose wife was staying in the condo as an overnight caretaker says, "She said she heard a big explosion". "A gaping hole of rubble".

He and his wife eventually made it to the basement and found rising water there.

It's not yet known what caused the building to splinter apart.

A rescue mission is under way at the partially-collapsed building.

"It was devastation", Carr said.

Dozens of rescue units are at the scene of the collapse, which is said to have happened at around 02:00 (07:00 GMT). Miami Dade Fire Rescue is conducting search and rescue. They returned upstairs, screamed for help and were eventually brought to safety by firefighters using a cherry-picker. It said more than 80 units were on the scene including rescue teams.

Officials said residents were being moved to the Surfside Community Center, and streets in the area were closed.

An apartment building in Miami has partially collapsed.

Video from the scene shows that one of the two people removed from the rubble was a child. Piles of rubble and debris surrounded the area just outside the building, and cars up to two blocks away were coated with with a light layer of dust from the debris.

The condominium was built in 1981.
