New Jersey Holocaust memorial targeted by Neo-Nazis
Ref. NG/D881On July 2, 2017, a Holocaust memorial in Lakewood, New Jersey, was targeted in an antisemitic incident involving a neo-Nazi banner. The Anti-Defamation League’s New Jersey branch posted photos of the banner on Twitter, noting that it contained a phrase referencing Nazi ideology.
The banner, described as a neo-Nazi white supremacist “Blood and Soil” poster, carried the headline “Take Your Country Back.” The message warned white Americans that they were losing their grip on the United States. Following the incident, the Anti-Defamation League called on residents, elected officials, and community and religious leaders to offer a full-throated condemnation of the attack in Lakewood.
At the time of the incident, the Anti-Defamation League reported that the number of antisemitic incidents in the United States during 2017 had risen significantly, tracking at 86 percent higher than the total recorded at the same point in 2016.
New Jersey Attorney General Christopher Porrino described the incident as sickening. To assist the investigation, state authorities offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to a conviction.
