Amy Schumer Slated For Broadway Debut in Steve Martin's 'Meteor Shower'

On August 7, 2017, it was announced that Amy Schumer would make her Broadway debut in the upcoming run of Steve Martin’s comedic play “Meteor Shower.” The production, directed by four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks, was scheduled to begin previews on November 1, 2017, at the Booth Theatre on West 45th Street, with opening night set for November 29.

Schumer was joined in the cast by Keegan-Michael Key, also making his Broadway debut, as well as Tony Award winner Laura Benanti and Alan Tudyk. Schumer and Tudyk played Corky and Norm, a married couple hosting another couple, Laura and Gerald, played by Benanti and Key, for dinner. Martin noted at the time that the writing was inspired by his psychological interpretation of a group of people gathering to watch a meteor shower.

The design team for the Broadway production included Beowulf Borritt on scenic design, Ann Roth on costume design, Natasha Katz on lighting design, and Fitz Patton on sound design. “Meteor Shower” had previously been staged the prior year at the Old Globe Theater in San Diego and the Long Wharf Theater in New Haven. Playwright Steve Martin, who was turning 72 on August 14, 2017, was previously nominated for Tony Awards for the book and music of his 2016 musical “Bright Star.”
