Ref. NG/0ABF

In February 2018, a $1 million donation goal was completed on the final day of a ten-day charitable campaign. The initiative, known as the “10 for 10” challenge, concluded with a donation to the charity Helping Oppressed Mothers Endure (H.O.M.E.) in Lithonia, Georgia.

The broader campaign, called the Million Dollar Pledge, was originally launched in September 2016. The plan involved donating $100,000 a month over ten months to various community organizations across the United States. The pledge also included donating all proceeds from 2016 NFL jersey sales to groups working in oppressed communities. Several public figures and athletes, including Serena Williams, Steph Curry, Chris Brown, and Usher, contributed to help reach the final goal.

At a press conference held when the initial protests began, the organizer stated that the goal was to affect change and to encourage others to do the same.

Beneficiaries of the campaign included Angel By Nature in Houston, Imagine LA in Los Angeles, Mothers Against Police Brutality in Dallas, the Advancement Project in Washington, D.C., and Communities United for Police Reform in New York. The protest actions that preceded the campaign began during the national anthem of the 2016 football season, after which the athlete opted out of a contract in March 2017 to become a free agent.
