High Arctic temperatures break records

High Arctic temperatures break records”

A freak warming around the North Pole is sending a blast of Arctic cold over Europe in a sign of "wacky" weather that may happen more often with man-made global warming.

According to Ruth Mottram of the Danish Meteorological Institute, "spikes in temperature are part of the normal weather patterns - what has been unusual about this event is that it has persisted for so long and that it has been so warm".

"To have zero degrees at the North Pole in February - it's just wrong", said Amelie Meyer, a researcher of ice-ocean interactions with the Norwegian Polar Institute. "It's never been this high at this time of year".

Such warm water is appearing to have an effect on air temperatures.

There are no permanent sensors at the North Pole, but weather services in the US and Scandinavian countries reported temperatures peaking on February 25.

"This is an anomaly among anomalies", Mann said. "It's a very interesting event".

On the most Northern meteorological station in the world, Cape Morris Jesup, which is located at the Northern end of Greenland, this year temperatures were higher than in London or Zurich, located from it for thousands of miles to the South.

A cyclist rides along the banks of the Neris river as temperatures dipped to minus -20C in Vilnius, Lithuania.

In fact, temperatures at the station have already been above freezing for 61 hours in 2018-a record that far surpasses the previous record of 16 hours in 2011, Robert Rohde, a physicist at Berkeley Earth, a California climate science nonprofit, wrote in a tweet. "Having said that, the last few winters have seen similar events of very warm air coming in to the Arctic, though not almost as large in magnitude", Mottram said.

Temperatures could feel as cold as -15C as freezing winds sweep through, forecasters have warned. However, cities such as Berlin will dive to as low as -12C and Moscow to -24C.

To Britons it's the "Beast of the East", to the Swedes the "snow cannon", while the Dutch have labelled it "The Siberian Bear".

He told Reuters: "What we once considered to be anomalies are becoming the new normal".

An alarming heatwave in the sunless winter Arctic is causing blizzards in Europe and forcing scientists to reconsider even their most pessimistic forecasts of climate change.

The ice coverage in the region is now at levels previously seen only in May or June, Labe posted on Twitter, citing data from the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre.

But scientists are deeply anxious about the pace of change in the Arctic, where temperatures are rising twice as fast as anywhere else on the planet and the sea ice area is shrinking.

A tourist restaurant boat specially designed for winter river cruises moves through the frozen Moskva River in Moscow, Russia, where temperatures -24C at night.

But climate change researchers and US allies overseas fear that Trump may ultimately come to regret his decision, as the absence of action's repercussions are emerging more clearly.

The Arctic warming is also shrinking the sea ice in the ocean and is exposing warmer water below that releases more heat into the atmosphere.

"During these storms, strong winds from the south blow warm, moist air from the Atlantic into the Arctic", said an AGU summary of Graham's findings. "The thinner ice drifts more quickly and can break up into smaller pieces".

A study published past year found that Arctic winter warming events are becoming more frequent and lasting longer than they did three decades ago. "It's going much faster than we thought", said Dr. Meyer.
